California mines and clipper ships, 1800-1905.

This folio volume consists of notes compiled by Howe and includes information on emigrant companies raised in Massachusetts for the purpose of sailing to California to search for gold. There are lists of such companies, lists of ships on which company members sailed to California, list of the ports from which such vessels sailed, a table indicating the length of voyage to California, and accounts of the history of the vessels themselves, as well as a list of clipper ships still in service in 1880. Longer entries pertain to the recruitment of crews to sail these vessels and the story of the San Francisco Company of Beverly, Mass. There is also an essay, "San Francisco and the Gold Fields," and a brief entry, "Reminiscences of a Gold Hunter," and a brief discussion of the Essex County and California Mining and Trade Company. Much of this material was printed in Howe's _Argonauts of '49_. There are also several miscellaneous statements of account of Howe scattered in the volume.
